Newport - Gateway to Wales is how the local council describes this city and in all fairness it is quite true. Newport is the first large city that most visitors to Wales from the south and east of England will travel through whether by road or rail. The city, like Cardiff and Barry grew from the exporting of coal and the manufacture of iron and steel. Today the coal has gone and the steel looks likely to follow. However many new industries are taking the place of these. Semi conductor factories are springing up on the edges of Newport and The Celtic Manor Hotel with its' golf course, is one of a number of new 5 star establishments opened in the last few years across South Wales and will be hosting The Ryder Cup.
